Audi 3DMR brings together innovative engineering, captivating entertainment and driver support functionality. The glasses-free 3D impression generated by this 3D HUD is a next innovative step in Audi’s evolution of the in-vehicle experience.

How does it work?

This first-of-its-kind 3D HUD uses a cutting-edge Light Field 3D rendering technique with eye-tracking to create a stunning virtual image with 3D effect. By applying eye-tracking technology, pixel assignment for the left and right images are adjusted in a real-time, and drivers can get freedom of motion within the eye-box and a persistent 3D impression, regardless of head position.

Next-generation 3D display technology enables unlimited new possibilities to support and entertain Audi customers. This type of 3D HUD generates an inspiring and futuristic interaction between car and driver while delivering a less distracting delivery of key information during driving.

When will it be available for use in cars?

Audi expects the first elements of the experience shown here to be available in the early 2020’s on the all-new electric PPE platform.

Does this display cause motion sickness?

Unlike virtual reality headsets or 3D TVs, AR 3D image itself isn’t confined by the display area with certain rectangular edges, and drivers can see the outside scenes together. As a result, this reduces the risk of motion sickness for the viewer and much greater image depth can be expressed.
